How to care for an olive tree

With proper care, your olive tree will remain healthy and beautiful for years to come. Even as a beginner, you don't need to worry: this tree is forgiving and undemanding.

Light: How much sun does an olive tree need?

An olive tree loves sun. So place it in a spot where it gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Outdoors, it thrives in a sunny spot like a south-facing patio. Indoors, it's best placed near a bright window.

Watering: How Often Should You Water an Olive Tree?

The olive tree is naturally accustomed to dry areas and therefore doesn't need much water. Allow the topsoil to dry thoroughly between waterings. In summer, it can use weekly watering, but in winter, it can easily be watered less frequently.

Be careful not to overwater: olive trees hate wet feet. So make sure excess water can drain from the pot.

The ideal potting soil for an olive tree

Use airy, well-draining potting soil for your olive tree. Preferably choose a mix containing sand and perlite. This helps excess water drain quickly.

You can also add a little sphagnum moss for extra airiness. Discover our full selection of potting soils and accessories to ensure your tree stays in top condition.

Common problems with an olive tree

Although an olive tree is strong, problems can occasionally arise. Fortunately, these are usually easy to solve.

Plant loses moisture or 'drips'

If your olive tree is shedding water droplets from the leaf tips, it's often guttation. This happens when the plant receives too much water and excretes the excess through the leaves.

Reduce watering and check the pot for adequate drainage. Consider adding hydroponic clay to the bottom of your pot for additional drainage.

Yellow leaves on your olive tree

Yellow leaves are usually a sign of overwatering or a lack of light. Check that the potting soil isn't too wet and, if necessary, move your plant to a brighter spot.

Use airy potting soil and only water when the top layer feels dry. Remember: it's better to have an olive tree too dry than too wet.

Pests on the Olive Tree

Aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs can appear occasionally. Check regularly under the leaves and in the leaf axils.

Are you having trouble with bugs? Use an organic insecticide like Jungle Mist . It's safe and effective, even for indoor use.

Roots emerge from the bottom of the pot

When roots appear at the bottom of your pot, it's time to repot. Choose a pot 20% larger than your current one and use fresh, well-draining potting soil.

It is best to repot in spring so that the plant can adjust during the growing season.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown leaf tips can indicate dry air or sudden temperature fluctuations. Don't place the plant next to a radiator or in a draft.

You can increase humidity with a humidifier or by placing a bowl of water nearby. Discover our tips for increasing humidity .
