How to care for a Vermiculite 3L

Watering: Vermiculite 3L

Vermiculite 3L helps you retain water better in your potting soil, so you'll need to water less often. For young cuttings, mix it into a potting soil mix from our Potting Soil and Accessories collection to prevent drying out. Thanks to its airy structure, Vermiculite 3L prevents water retention, which helps prevent root rot.

Light: Vermiculite 3L

Store your 3L Vermiculite bag out of direct sunlight, preferably in a cool, dry place. This will ensure optimal moisture absorption and keep the granular structure intact. Avoid locations with significant temperature fluctuations to prevent clumping.

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves are often caused by irregular water management or a lack of airflow in the root zone. Vermiculite 3L is easily mixed into your potting soil, ensuring your plants receive more even water and sufficient oxygen. For additional tips, also read our blog post "How to use vermiculite in your potting soil " about combining it with perlite and coconut coir potting soil.

Plant drips

A dripping plant usually indicates overwatering or root rot. Vermiculite 3L improves drainage and simply adds a layer of hydroponic clays, such as our LECA Balls , to the bottom of the pot to absorb excess moisture. This will help your plant regain its airy roots and prevent water leakage.

Pests

Sometimes pests like thrips or spider mites establish themselves due to constant moisture. Vermiculite 3L doesn't dry out too quickly, but retains enough moisture so you don't need to spray as often – discouraging flying aphids. For persistent pests, combine it with Sticky Traps for fungus gnat control for effective control.

Roots emerge from the bottom of the pot

If roots grow through the drainage holes, it means your plant needs repotting or the potting mix is too compact. When repotting, add 3L of Vermiculite to a new mix with Perlite or our 5L Potting Soil for Aroids to create sufficient space and air for the roots. This will give your houseplant a better start in a fresh pot.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown edges can be caused by fluctuations in humidity, excessively dry air, or too much direct sunlight. Mixing Vermiculite 3L into your substrate improves the moisture balance and reduces stress for your plant. For additional tips, be sure to read our guide on what perlite is and how to use it in combination with peat moss.
