How to care for a potting soil for Hoya 5L
Watering Potting soil for Hoya 5L
The Hoya 5L potting soil retains just enough moisture without becoming too compact. Water when the top 2–3 cm of the soil feels dry, but don't let it sit for weeks. Too much water can quickly lead to root problems. For additional tips on hydration, you can also read our blog post about what perlite is and how it improves your potting soil.
Light requirements Potting soil for Hoya 5L
Although the soil itself doesn't require light, the ambient light intensity determines how quickly the Hoya absorbs nutrients from the soil. Therefore, place your Hoya in a bright spot, out of direct midday sunlight, to prevent leaf burn. Insufficient light can stunt growth and result in fewer flowers. For more advice on light requirements, see our guide on 5 tips for increasing humidity .
Frequently occurring problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves on a Hoya often indicate overwatering or insufficient nutrients in the soil. Check that your Hoya 5L potting soil doesn't remain soaking wet for too long and let the top layer dry out first. If necessary, add a little light organic fertilizer or treat your plant to a drop of plant food. Also see our step-by-step guide in the jungle mist spray blog.
Plant drips
If your Hoya is leaking water, this could indicate overwatering or high humidity. Ensure good ventilation around the plant and use a pot with drainage holes. Allow excess water to drain and, if necessary, repot with fresh Hoya Potting Soil (5L). This prevents the soil from remaining too wet and the plant from sweating.
Plagues
Whiteflies, mealybugs, and spider mites are common in tropical plants. Regularly inspect the undersides of leaves and, if infested, use a natural insecticide or sticky strips. Give your Hoya a light shower to rinse away dust and small insects. For stubborn pests, our sticky traps for fungus gnats can be a solution.
Carrots emerge from the bottom of the pot
A fast-growing Hoya can push out its roots over time. This is a sign that the plant needs more potting space or fresh soil. If so, repot it in a slightly larger pot and fill it with fresh Hoya Potting Soil (5L). This will give your Hoya sufficient nutrients and space for new roots.
Brown edges on leaves
Brown edges often indicate overly dry air, sunburn, or salt buildup in the soil. Check that your Hoya 5L potting soil doesn't have too high a salt concentration by occasionally adding extra water. Also, increase the humidity by spraying or using a humidifier. Read more about ideal humidity in our blog post about caring for your plant's leaves .
