How to care for Potting Soil for Calathea & Maranta 5L
Watering for Potting soil for Calathea & Maranta 5L
Calatheas and Marantas prefer evenly moist soil, but not waterlogged. With each watering, allow excess water to drain from the drainage holes to prevent root rot. Always check the top two centimeters of potting soil before watering; if it still feels damp, it's better to wait a day. Our potting soil maintains the moisture balance for longer. Need extra hygiene? Then also check out our hydro grains or pomice .
Light requirements for Calathea & Maranta potting soil 5L
Calatheas and Marantas grow best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves and fade their beautiful patterns. Place your plants about a meter from an east- or west-facing window, for example. In a dark corner, they will lose their leaf markings and may grow more slowly. Combine your Calathea with a Monstera minima for a playful statement in your living room.
Frequently occurring problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves can indicate overwatering or a nutrient deficiency. Let the top layer of potting soil dry out first and adjust your watering pattern. Preferably use filtered or pre-watered water to prevent limescale buildup. If your potting soil already contains lime, add some activated carbon to correct the pH.
Plant dripping / wetness under the pot
If your Calathea is constantly dripping, it could be caused by a combination of high humidity and low room temperature. Ensure adequate ventilation and use a jungle mist spray to increase humidity without keeping the potting mix soggy. Remove excess water from the saucer after each watering.
Pests (spider mites, thrips, fungus gnats)
Spider mites and thrips like to nest under the leaves, especially in dry air. Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth and, if infested, use our sticky traps against fungus gnats . For an even more thorough approach, you can use a plant sprayer with a green soap solution.
Roots protrude from the ground
If roots are searching for space at the bottom of the pot, it means your plant is hungry for more potting mix or a larger pot. Repot your Calathea in a pot 2–3 cm larger or top it up with fresh "Potting Soil for Calathea & Maranta 5L." Also check out our Potting Soil for Aroids 5L for airy support.
Brown edges on the leaves
Brown or crispy leaf edges often indicate low humidity or too much direct sunlight. Increase humidity with a humidifier or group plants on a tray with hydroponic clays. Make sure your plant is in a bright spot, but not in direct sunlight. Read more about indoor humidity in our blog post " 5 tips for increasing humidity in your home ."
