How to care for an Epiphyllum
With the right care, the Epiphyllum is a very rewarding plant. It grows relatively quickly, blooms annually with proper care, and adapts well to indoor climates. Below, you can read how to best care for it.
Light for an Epiphyllum
An epiphyllum likes plenty of light, but not direct sunlight. Place it near an east- or west-facing window, for example. Too much direct sunlight can burn the leaves, which you can see as pale or brown spots. Too little light, on the other hand, prevents it from producing flowers. A bright spot with filtered sunlight is therefore ideal.
How often do you water an Epiphyllum?
The Epiphyllum prefers slightly moist soil, but absolutely not wet feet. Let the top layer of the potting mix dry out before watering again. In spring and summer, you can water more frequently, but in winter, once every two weeks is often sufficient. Make sure no water remains in the pot – use a pot with drainage holes. Are you experiencing problems with overly wet soil or are you unsure about drainage? Then check out our blog about root rot in houseplants .
The perfect potting soil for an Epiphyllum
Airy and well-draining potting soil is essential for healthy Epiphyllum. Ideally, use a mix of cactus soil with some sphagnum moss and perlite to ensure sufficient airflow. This prevents the roots from suffocating or rotting. You'll find all the necessary potting soil and accessories in our collection.
Common problems with Epiphyllum
Although Epiphyllum is relatively easy to care for, some problems can still arise. Below, you can read how to recognize and solve them.
The plant drips water
If your Epiphyllum is showing water droplets at the tips of its leaves, this is usually guttation. This happens when the plant is overwatered and is trying to drain excess moisture. Reduce watering and check that no water remains in the saucer under the pot. Also ensure sufficient humidity, for example, with these tips to increase humidity .
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves can have several causes. It's usually a sign of overwatering or a lack of light. Check that the potting soil isn't too wet and, if necessary, move the plant to a brighter spot. If the leaves are limp and yellow, the roots are likely getting too much water. Read here what you can do about root rot .
Pests on your Epiphyllum
Spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips can sometimes be a problem, especially in dry indoor environments. Check the undersides of leaves regularly. Small fluff or specks are often the first sign. At the first sign of pests, treat your plant with an organic insect spray . Are you bothered by thrips? Then also read our blog about thrips on the monstera ; the approach is the same.
Roots emerge from the bottom of the pot
When the roots start growing from the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot your Epiphyllum. Choose a slightly larger pot and use airy potting soil as described above. It's best to repot in spring so the plant can recover quickly and continue growing.
Brown edges on the leaves
Brown edges on the leaves are often the result of air that is too dry or a lack of water. Move the plant further away from a heater or increase the humidity with a humidifier or a bowl of water nearby. Read more tips on caring for leaves in our blog about leaf care .
