How to care for an Epiphyllum
Caring for an Epiphyllum is easier than you think. The right light, watering, and soil make a world of difference. Below you'll find all the step-by-step care instructions.
Light for an Epiphyllum
An Epiphyllum loves plenty of light, but avoid direct sunlight. Too much sunlight can damage or discolor the leaves. Place the plant in a room with bright, indirect light—for example, near an east- or north-facing window.
In summer, the plant can also be kept outdoors, as long as it's sheltered from the midday sun. This sometimes even encourages flowering. If you're looking for more plants for shade , the Epiphyllum is definitely a winner.
How to water an Epiphyllum
The Epiphyllum originates from tropical rainforests and prefers slightly moist soil. Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of soil feels dry. In summer, this can be weekly, but in winter, it's best to water less frequently.
Note: Overwatering quickly causes root rot. Always use a pot with drainage holes. Still unsure about the health of your roots? Read our guide on what to do about root rot .
The perfect potting soil for an Epiphyllum
An airy and well-draining potting soil is essential for the Epiphyllum. Use a mixture of cactus soil, perlite, and possibly some sphagnum moss to increase airiness.

Common problems with an Epiphyllum
Like any plant, an epiphyllum can also suffer from certain ailments. Fortunately, most problems are easy to solve.
The plant is "leaking" or dripping
A dripping Epiphyllum often indicates overwatering or an overly humid environment. Check the pot's drainage. Is there water at the bottom of the cachepot? Remove the inner pot and let the roots dry out.
If the problem persists, it is advisable to repot the plant in fresh, airy soil with good drainage.
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves can have several causes. The most common is overwatering. Check that the potting soil feels consistently moist.
Another cause could be a lack of light. Move the plant to a brighter spot, but avoid direct sunlight.
Pests on your Epiphyllum
Spider mites, mealybugs, or thrips can nest on the leaves. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly. If you see small bugs or sticky spots, then action is necessary.
Use an organic insect spray like Jungle Mist to safely tackle the problem. Have you ever had problems with thrips? Then also read our article about thrips on your monstera – the approach is similar.
Roots coming out of the bottom of the pot
When you see roots appearing at the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot your Epiphyllum. Choose a pot that's 2 to 4 cm larger in diameter. Use fresh soil and check the health of the roots immediately.

Brown edges on the leaves
