How to Care for an Eggling Wild Strawberry - Grow Your Own Strawberries

Watering

For healthy growth, your Eggling Wild Strawberry - grow your own strawberries needs regular watering. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid soaking the potting mix. A good method is to water until the excess water drains through the drainage holes. Preferably use a fine-meshed watering can, such as the ELHO 1.5L watering can, for even distribution. Check once a week whether the top layer of potting mix has dried slightly before watering again.

Light

Strawberry plants love plenty of light, but direct, bright midday sun can scorch the leaves. Place your Eggling Wild Strawberry - grow your own strawberries on a bright windowsill, preferably facing south or west with filtered light. If you're in a room with insufficient daylight, consider an additional plant lamp or move the plant closer to the window. Sufficient light encourages flowering and fruit formation, so you can harvest multiple times later.

Potting soil and nutrients

The included potting soil is specially selected for strawberries to ensure good drainage and air circulation. Need extra support? Add some Hydrograins, Leca clay granules, to the bottom of the pot to prevent root rot. After the first few weeks, the nutrient crystals will slowly dissolve and nourish your plant for up to three months. If you want to feed again after that, you can use an organic plant food found in our Potting Soil and Accessories category.

Common Problems with Eggling Wild Strawberry - Grow Your Own Strawberries

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves often result from a lack of nutrients or irregular watering. First, check whether your plant has received sufficient nutrients. Water regularly in small doses rather than infrequently, so that the roots always have access to moisture. A magnesium or iron deficiency can also cause discoloration; in that case, add some Epsom salts or a special aroid food, such as in the Potting Soil for Aroids 5L .

Plant dripping

A damp soil indicates poor drainage or overwatering. Remove the plant from its eggling pot and check that the drainage layer with hydroponic clays isn't clogged. If necessary, refresh the top layer of potting soil and add extra perlite for a more airy substrate. Adjust your watering routine: let the top 2 cm of soil dry out before watering again.

Plagues

Wild strawberries can sometimes be affected by spider mites, mealybugs, or aphids. A gentle spray with water and a dash of natural soap can repel most pests. For persistent pests, our Sticky Traps for fungus gnats or organic plant sprays are ideal. Check under the leaves weekly and treat at the first sign of pests.

Roots go at the bottom of the pot

If roots grow out of the drainage holes, your Eggling Wild Strawberry - Grow Your Own Strawberries needs a larger pot. Choose a pot with a diameter of 12–15 cm and use fresh potting soil from our Potting Soil & Accessories collection. Repotting is best done in spring or early summer, making sure the roots aren't too deep in the new pot.

Brown edges on leaves

Brown leaf edges can be caused by excessively dry air, excessive fertilizer, or excessive heat. Increase the humidity with a plant sprayer or place your strawberry near a container of moistened Leca balls. Avoid direct contact with radiators or hot electrical appliances. Consult our blog post "5 tips to increase humidity in your home" for additional advice.
