How to care for a Caladium
Watering your Caladium
A Caladium likes even moisture, but not soaking wet. Water your Caladium about once a week, checking in between to see if the top few inches of soil have dried slightly. During the warm summer months, you can water more frequently. Use lukewarm water, as cold water can shock the roots. For extra humidity, you can occasionally spray with a fine mist, for example, from our jungle mist spray .
Light requirements of your Caladium
Caladium grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid placing this plant in direct sunlight, as the intense midday heat can burn the leaves. A spot near an east- or north-facing window is ideal. In a room with insufficient light, the leaves may lose their color and markings. For inspiration for shady corners, see our shade plants collection.
Common problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves on a Caladium often indicate overwatering or poorly draining potting soil. Check that the pot has sufficient drainage holes and consider switching to a mix with added perlite or hydroponic clays, such as our potting soil for aroids . However, too little water can also cause yellowing. Monitor the moisture level closely and adjust your watering schedule.
Plant drips
If your Caladium is dripping, it could indicate overwatering and root rot. Let the plant dry out as much as possible until the top layer of potting soil is almost dry. If it becomes too wet, repot it in a pot with fresh, airy soil. Read more tips in our blog about root rot in houseplants .
Pests
Slow-growing Caladiums sometimes attract aphids, spider mites, or thrips. Check under the leaves regularly and treat early infestations with a mild soap solution or an organic pesticide. For persistent pests, you can use our sticky traps against fungus gnats . This will keep your Caladium healthy and free of harmful creatures.
Carrots coming out of the pot
When your Caladium's roots grow out of the drainage holes, it's a sign the plant is outgrowing its pot. Repot your Caladium in a pot about 3–5 cm larger in diameter. Use a mix of potting soil with perlite or coconut husk for good aeration. If you don't have a suitable pot yet, check out our pots for houseplants .
Brown edges on leaves
Brown edges are often the result of overly dry air or irregular watering. Water your Caladium regularly and increase the humidity around the plant as needed. A humidifier or a bowl of water on the windowsill can help. Read more about humidity in our blog post " 5 Tips for Increasing Humidity in Your Home ."
