Caladium is a colorful eye-catcher in your home. Its striking, heart-shaped leaves bring life to any room. This plant is perfect for beginner plant lovers and thrives in a warm, humid environment.

A Caladium thrives in a beautiful pot that retains moisture well. Choose from our selection of houseplant pots in the "buy houseplant pots" section. Also, use an airy, well-draining potting mix for aroids (5l) for healthy root development. This will give your Caladium the best start.

How to care for a Caladium

Watering: Caladium

Caladium needs regular watering to maintain its colorful foliage. Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid allowing the roots to sit in stagnant water. Check at least once a week whether the top layer of potting soil feels dry and adjust your watering accordingly.

Light: Caladium

Caladiums prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, while too little light can fade the leaf markings. Therefore, place your Caladium near an east- or west-facing window, or slightly further away from a south-facing window.

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves can indicate either too little or too much water. Check the potting soil and adjust your watering. Also check the humidity in your home – low humidity can cause dry, yellowed leaf edges.

Plant drips a lot of moisture

A Caladium can sometimes exude moisture through its hydathodes. This is normal with high humidity and frequent watering. Avoid placing the plant directly on furniture and use a saucer to catch dripping water.

Plagues

The biggest enemies are spider mites and aphids. Inspect your plant regularly and, for mild infestations, use jungle mist spray or sticky traps to combat fungus gnats. For severe infestations, use a mild insecticide or replace the affected leaves.

Roots grow from the soil

If you see roots emerging from the bottom of the pot, this means your Caladium urgently needs a larger pot. Repot it in a pot one size larger and immediately refresh the soil with nutrients.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown edges are often caused by an overly dry environment or too much direct sunlight. Increase the humidity with a humidifier or a water bowl on the radiator. Move your plant slightly further away from direct sunlight.

Is Caladium poisonous?

Caladium contains calcium oxalate crystals and is mildly toxic if ingested. Keep children and pets away from the leaves. For safe, non-toxic alternatives, see our collection of non-toxic houseplants safe for pets.
