The Beaucarnea Recurvata, also known as the Elephant's Foot or Ponytail Palm, is a real eye-catcher in any interior. With its characteristic, rounded trunk and graceful, drooping leaves, this plant creates a tropical accent without much effort. Ideal for beginner plant lovers looking for a low-maintenance plant with a robust appearance.
How to care for a Beaucarnea Recurvata
Watering Beaucarnea Recurvata
Beaucarnea Recurvata stores water in its thickened trunk, so you only need to water it sparingly. During the growing season (spring and summer), water it about every three weeks, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. In autumn and winter, you can water even less: once a month is often sufficient. Always monitor the moisture in the potting soil to prevent root rot.
Light Beaucarnea Recurvata
This houseplant loves plenty of (indirect) light and thrives in an east- or west-facing window. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, but too little light will cause the plant to slowly shrink. Therefore, don't place your Ponytail Palm in a dark corner; instead, provide a bright spot. This will keep the trunk sturdy and help the plant develop its characteristic shape.
Potting soil and fertilizer Beaucarnea Recurvata
Use a light, well-draining potting soil, for example, from our potting soil and accessories collection. A mix for cacti or succulents works well because it quickly drains excess water. Fertilize once a month during the growing season with a liquid houseplant fertilizer to keep your Beaucarnea beautiful, dark green leaves.
Common problems with Beaucarnea Recurvata
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves can indicate overwatering or insufficient light. First, check your watering routine and adjust it if the soil stays moist for too long. Move the plant to a brighter location to stimulate photosynthesis. If the leaves are damaged, cut them off just above the stem with sharp shears.
Plant dripping water
Sometimes you'll see water dripping from the stem or roots; this is a sign of overwatering. Let the plant dry out thoroughly and, if necessary, repot it in fresh, dry potting soil. Make sure your pot has a drainage hole and allows excess water to drain away, for example, using a pot with a saucer from our flower pot collection .
Pests
Mealybugs and spider mites are the most common pests on Beaucarneas. Check the leaf axils and the trunk regularly. For a light infestation, a treatment with our jungle mist spray is sufficient; otherwise, you can opt for sticky traps or a mild soap solution.
Carrots emerge from the bottom of the pot
If the roots are sticking out of the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot. Choose a pot one size larger and fill it with fresh potting soil for aroids or cacti. This gives the roots room to grow and keeps the plant healthy. Read our tips in the blog post "What to do about root rot" for more advice.
Brown edges on the leaves
Brown edges are often caused by excessively dry air or irregular watering. Run a humidifier in the room or place a bowl of water nearby. Also check that the soil isn't too dry; water as soon as the top layer of potting soil has dried out.
