How to Care for a ZZ Raven
Watering for ZZ Raven
ZZ Raven prefers consistent, but not excessive, care. Water approximately every two to three weeks, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Overwatering can easily lead to root rot, a common problem with this houseplant. Ideally, use a watering can with a fine spray attachment, such as the Elho 1.5L watering can , to ensure you provide sufficient water without wasting it.
Light for ZZ Raven
ZZ Raven grows best in a spot with bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves, while too little light slows growth. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal, but it can also thrive in lower light conditions. For more inspiration on light requirements for various plants, read our guide on how much light a Monstera needs .
Pot and base
Use a well-draining potting soil specifically formulated for aroid plants, such as our 5L Aroid Potting Soil . Make sure the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to drain away. You can find a nice, matching pot in our houseplant pot collection. Change the potting soil every two years to replenish nutrients and stimulate growth.
Nutrition and fertilization
Fertilize the ZZ Raven once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced plant food. A liquid all-purpose fertilizer is sufficient, as this plant is not a heavy eater. You can stop fertilizing in autumn and winter; growth will then be at a standstill and the plant will need less food.
Common problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves on ZZ Raven often indicate overly wet soil or sudden temperature fluctuations. Check the soil moisture and adjust watering accordingly. Has root rot already developed? Then read our tips on what to do about root rot .
Plant drips
Sometimes you'll see water droplets running down the petiole of your ZZ Raven; this is called guttation. It's a natural phenomenon with high humidity and excessive feeding. Ensure good ventilation and feed slightly less to reduce guttation.
Plagues
ZZ Raven usually easily tackles pests like spider mites and mealybugs, but severe infestations require immediate action. Use our sticky traps for fungus gnats or a gentle organic pesticide. Dust the leaves regularly with a microfiber dusting glove .
Carrots coming out of the bottom of the pot
When the roots emerge from the drainage holes, it's time to repot in a slightly larger pot. This also refreshes the soil. Choose a pot that's 2–3 cm larger in diameter so the roots have room to grow further.
Brown edges on leaves
Brown edges often indicate low humidity or direct heat from a radiator. Increase the humidity with a plant sprayer or place a bowl of water nearby. Prefer comprehensive parenting advice? Read our tips in the blog "5 Tips to Increase Humidity in Your Home" on deplantrekkers.com .
