Pumice is a natural volcanic rock that, thanks to its open structure, provides excellent drainage and aeration in potting soil.
Pumice stone prevents root rot and promotes a healthy root system in your favorite houseplants.
The porous granules ensure that excess water is quickly removed, while air can reach the roots.
Thanks to the neutral pH value of pumice stone, you can combine it with standard potting soil and accessories ,
but also with specialist soil mixtures such as potting soil for aroids .
For extra moisture regulation you can alternate with vermiculite or perlite .
Create your own ideal substrate by mixing in some coconut bark or sphagnum moss here and there.
With pumice stone you not only give your plant a solid base, but also a neat appearance:
The grey-white granules match any pot, from sleek basic pots to colourful models from our flower pot collection .
Are you a fan of a more industrial look? Then combine it with a growing pot and leave the granules visible in the pot.

How to Care for a Pumice Stone
Watering Pumice Stone
Pumice itself doesn't need water, but it helps keep your soil airy and moist.
Mixing pumice into your potting soil will keep the substrate moist for longer, without creating wet clumps.
Water your plant as you normally would; pumice stone quickly drains away excess water.
Light requirements Pumice stone
Pumice stone is not light-sensitive and can be used in any corner of your room.
The material does not change colour in bright sunlight or in a dark room.
So feel free to place your plants in a spot with direct sunlight or in the shade without the pumice stone losing its effectiveness.
Frequently occurring problems
Yellow leaves Pumice stone
Yellow leaves usually indicate too much or too little water for the plant, not a problem with the pumice itself.
Check that your pot is well-draining and that your plant is not constantly sitting in wet soil.
If necessary, mix more pumice into the soil to improve drainage. Also read our tips in the blog post about recognizing and treating root rot .
Plant leaking
If water runs down the bottom of the pot, it means the pumice is doing its job well.
Make sure your pot holder is generously sized to catch any leaking water.
Use our durable plastic coasters or stylish terracotta dishes to prevent spills.
Plagues
Pumice itself does not attract insects or snails.
Check your plant for common pests such as spider mites and fungus gnats.
Use our sticky traps against fungus gnats or read more in our article about pest control .
Roots come out
If the roots grow out of the drainage holes, your plant needs a larger pot.
Pumice stone provides airy soil, which stimulates root growth.
Repot into a larger pot and fill the sides with additional pumice and potting soil.
Brown edges
Brown leaf edges often indicate dry air or irregular watering.
Pumice stone helps retain moisture, but spray your plant regularly with the plant sprayer .
Increase humidity using a breadbox method or place the plant near a water source.
Is pumice poisonous?
Pumice stone is completely harmless to humans, children and pets.
You can safely use it for gardening and repotting without gloves, although we recommend avoiding dust formation.
For more non-toxic houseplants, check out our collection of safe plants .
