How to Care for a Light Up Terrarium
Watering Light Up Terrarium
A terrarium with a closed or semi-closed lid needs less water than an open pot. Water it a little every two to three weeks to prevent the soil from becoming too moist. Overwatering can cause root rot; read our blog post about root rot in your houseplants for helpful tips.
Light requirements Light Up Terrarium
The built-in LED light source provides even light distribution, but you can also place the terrarium near a window. Direct sunlight can quickly warm up the small ecosystem, so choose bright, indirect daylight. For more information on how to safely place plants in the light, see our article on how much light a Monstera needs.
Frequently occurring problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves are often caused by too much water or too little fertilizer. Check the soil regularly and, if necessary, add some perlite for better drainage. Cut away the yellowed leaves to prevent mold and then water less frequently in the next round.
Plant dripping
If water droplets remain on the inside of the glass, the humidity is too high. Leave the lid slightly open or remove it for a day to allow excess moisture to escape. Keep the plant in a consistent ambient temperature, as excessive fluctuations can cause stress.
Plagues
Even a closed terrarium can be affected by spider mites or fungus gnats. If necessary, use sticky traps against fungus gnats or a natural insecticide spray. Also check other plants in your home, such as your Ficus Lyrata , to prevent the spread.
Carrots are coming out from underneath
Sometimes roots grow against the bottom of the glass or creep along the edges. This is usually nothing to worry about. However, if the roots are rotting, you can carefully remove some and amend the soil with fresh potting soil. For aerobic root development, you can also add hydroponic pebbles to the bottom.
Brown edges on the leaves
Brown edges often indicate air that is too dry or insufficient nutrients in the soil. Increase the humidity by occasionally spraying with a plant mister or placing a bowl of water nearby. Feed your terrarium once a month with a light fertilizer or test the pH level and adjust as needed.
