How to care for an Extra Hot Chili grow kit
Watering Extra Hot Chili Grow Kit
Proper watering is crucial for your chili peppers. Keep the potting soil slightly moist, but avoid standing water in the potting container. Overwatering can lead to root rot; read here what to do about root rot in your houseplants. Check once a week if the top inch of soil feels dry and then water with filtered or room-temperature water.
Light for Extra Hot Chili grow kit
Extra Hot Chilies need plenty of light to develop beautiful, full plants. Place your grow pot on a sunny south- or west-facing windowsill for at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Too little light will cause the plants to wilt and develop fewer chilies. Consider a grow light if you don't have enough natural light, as explained in our Monstera Guide blog post.
Species of the Capsicum family
Within the Capsicum family you will find many varieties that vary in color, shape and heat level:
- Cayenne pepper
- Jalapeño
- Habanero
- Scotch Bonnet
- Bird's Eye
- Anaheim
- Ghost Pepper
This list will inspire you to explore even more peppers after this first grow. Combine your chili experience with other edible plants like the aromatic coffee grow kit or the eggling wild strawberry for a complete edible windowsill.
Is Extra Hot Chili poisonous?
The fruit of your chili pepper is edible and non-toxic to humans. However, the seeds and fruit may burn on the skin or eyes, so always wash your hands after handling. Keep children and pets away during harvesting to prevent watery eyes or irritated skin. For more information about non-toxic houseplants, see our collection of non-toxic houseplants safe for pets.
Common problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves often indicate a combination of insufficient nutrients and irregular watering. First, check that you're using the recommended potting soil and accessories, and add additional nutrients as directed. Ensure consistent watering so the soil doesn't dry out completely between waterings.
Plant dripping
If water leaks from the bottom of the pot, the drainage may be clogged. Carefully remove the plant from its outer pot, remove excess soil, and check the drainage holes. Refill the pot with well-draining potting soil and place the growing pot in a saucer that catches excess water.
Plagues
Spider mites and thrips are often the culprits in houseplants. Inspect the undersides of leaves regularly and replace affected plants to prevent the spread. For mild infestations, use insect-repellent sticky traps for fungus gnats or a mild soap solution. For more serious problems, consult our range of plant accessories.
Roots growing out of the pot
Bulging roots indicate a pot that's too small. Repot your chili in a larger container with fresh aroid-specific potting soil or an all-purpose mix. A spacious pot provides more nutrients and a water reservoir for healthy growth.
Brown edges on the leaves
Brown leaf edges are often caused by low humidity or too much direct sunlight during the hottest hours. Increase the humidity with our jungle mist spray and move the plant slightly out of the brightest midday light. Also read the blog post "5 tips to increase humidity in your home" for additional humidity tips.
