How to Care for a Unicorn Planter

Watering the Unicorn Planter

Water your Unicorn Planter only when the top layer of potting soil feels dry. Too much water can lead to root rot, while too little water causes the plant to dry out and the leaves to droop. A watering can, such as the Elho 1.5L watering can, helps you water more efficiently. Each time you water, check that excess water can drain properly through the hole in the bottom.

Light requirements of the Unicorn Planter

The Unicorn Planter prefers a spot with bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can heat up the ceramic and dry out the potting mix, increasing the risk of brown edges on the leaves. Therefore, place it next to a window with curtains or in a spot with filtered sunlight. In dark corners, your plant may grow more slowly; use a plant mister to maintain the humidity.

Frequently occurring problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves are often caused by overwatering or insufficient light. First, check that the potting soil is well-draining and that you're not keeping the Unicorn Planter too wet. If necessary, place the pot in the Sun-Loving collection for extra light. Remove yellow leaves promptly to prevent mold.

Plant is leaking or dripping

Dripping from the bottom can indicate overwatering or a blocked drainage hole. Make sure you use a potting soil and water slowly. Excess water should never remain under the pot for more than fifteen minutes. Consider using some hydroponic clays, such as Leca balls , to improve drainage.

Plagues

Green aphids, spider mites, and fungus gnats can quickly weaken your Unicorn Planter. Check under the leaves and in the leaf axils regularly. Treat minor infestations immediately with a mild soap solution or an organic spray. Sticky traps are excellent for fungus gnats.

Roots emerge from under the pot

When the roots grow out of the bottom of the Unicorn Planter, it's time for a larger pot or to prune. Repot the plant in a larger size, for example, in one of our houseplant pots . If roots are pushing out, carefully trim off some of the roots and refill with fresh potting soil.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown edges usually indicate dry air or excessively high temperatures. Keep the room temperature around 18–24°C (64–75°F) and regularly mist the leaves with a little water. Avoid placing the Unicorn Planter near radiators or air conditioners. For additional tips, see our blog post about increasing humidity .
