How to care for a Coffea Arabica

Watering Coffea Arabica

Coffea Arabica prefers an even watering without becoming soggy. Water about once a week in spring and summer, depending on the room temperature and humidity. Allow the top layer of potting soil to dry slightly before watering again. Avoid waterlogging by using a pot with a drainage hole and, if necessary, a layer of hydroponic clays or perlite (see potting soil and accessories).

Light requirements of Coffea Arabica

Coffea Arabica grows best in a location with bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can quickly burn the leaves, while too little light stunts growth and reduces bean production. Place the plant near an east- or west-facing window, or in a bright spot without direct midday sun. For other shade-tolerant houseplants, consider our ZZ plant or Sansevieria zeylanica .

Common problems

Yellow leaves

If the leaves of your Coffea Arabica turn yellow, it could indicate overwatering or acidic soil. Check that the soil isn't constantly wet and, if necessary, allow it to dry out a bit. Yellow leaves can also indicate a nutrient deficiency; therefore, provide some liquid houseplant fertilizer monthly during the growing season.

Plant drips

If your plant releases water droplets along its leaves, this is guttation. This is usually harmless and means the plant is removing excess moisture from its cells. Boost air circulation and reduce watering slightly to avoid overwatering.

Plagues

Spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids can thrive on the tender coffee leaves. Regularly inspect the underside of the leaves and treat with a mild soap solution or a natural remedy like neem oil. For persistent infestations, we also offer sticky traps for fungus gnats and other organic solutions.

Roots emerge from the bottom of the pot

A Coffea Arabica can eventually grow roots through the drainage hole. This is usually a sign that it needs a larger pot. In spring, repot it in a pot one size larger and use fresh potting soil for aroids or houseplants (for example, our 5L potting soil for aroids ).

Brown edges on the leaf margins

Brown edges often result from overly dry air or irregular watering. Increase the humidity by occasionally spraying with a plant mister or placing a container of water and hydroponic clays nearby. Avoid placing the coffee palm too close to radiators. For more tips on increasing humidity, see our blog post "5 Tips to Increase Humidity in Your Home ."
