How to care for a Calathea Zebrina

Watering

The Calathea Zebrina likes even moisture in its potting soil. Water it regularly, but avoid allowing the soil to become soaking wet. Excessively wet soil can lead to root rot; read more about this in our guide "What to do about root rot ."

Light

Calathea Zebrina thrives in a spot with indirect light. Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight, as this can burn the leaves. Insufficient light can cause the leaves to droop, similar to your Monstera Deliciosa in a shady corner.

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves are often caused by too much water or too little humidity. Check the top layer of soil; is it still moist? Adjust your watering routine and increase the humidity with a plant mister .

Plant dripping

If water droplets appear on the leaves, this is guttation. This is usually harmless and a sign that the plant is draining excess water. Reduce watering slightly and ensure good air circulation.

Plagues

Spider mites, thrips, and aphids can attack Calatheas. Regularly inspect the undersides of the leaves. Use a mild dish soap or try our sticky traps for fungus gnats for natural control.

Roots grow from the soil

If roots are pushing out of the bottom of the pot, your Calathea needs more space. Repot the plant in a slightly larger pot, for example, from our collection of pots for houseplants .

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown edges often result from air that is too dry or too much direct sunlight. Increase the humidity by spraying or placing the plant on a humidifier. Also read our tips in the blog post "5 tips for increasing humidity ."
