How to care for an Alocasia Cucullata
Watering Alocasia Cucullata
Water the Alocasia cucullata regularly, keeping the potting soil moist but not soggy. Check with your finger whether the top layer has dried slightly before watering again. Preferably use water with a low-limescale base and ensure good drainage with a layer of hydroponic clays or perlite at the bottom of the pot.
Light for Alocasia Cucullata
Place your Alocasia Cucullata in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight. Direct midday sun can burn the leaves, while too little light leads to limp stems and smaller leaves. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. If your lighting is too dim, a grow light or additional reflective material can help.
Humidity and temperature
The Alocasia cucullata prefers high humidity, preferably between 60 and 80 percent. Increase the humidity by regularly spraying the plant with a jungle mist spray or by placing a bowl of water with hydro grains next to it. Keep the room temperature between 18 and 25°C. Temperatures below 15°C or drafts can inhibit growth.
Power supply
Fertilize your Alocasia cucullata every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Preferably choose a fertilizer specifically formulated for evergreen houseplants or aroids. Stop fertilizing in the fall and winter, when the plant is dormant.
Common problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves are often a sign of either too much or too little water. Check the moisture level and adjust your watering routine. Remove affected leaves to conserve energy and promote air circulation around the plant.
Plant is dripping
If your Alocasia cucullata is dripping, it could indicate excessive transpiration or sudden temperature fluctuations. Move the plant to a draft-free location and reduce the humidity if necessary. Also, ensure the pot is not placed on a wooden floor so that water can evaporate.
Damage by pests
Regularly check for spider mites, aphids, and fungus gnats. For mild infestations, wiping the leaves with a damp cloth and placing sticky traps will help. Severe infestations can be controlled with a suitable product or by temporarily quarantining the plant.
Roots emerge from the bottom of the pot
When roots grow out of the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot. Choose a pot one size larger and use fresh alocasia potting soil . Repot in the spring so the plant can recover quickly.
Brown edges on the leaves
Brown leaf tips often indicate air that is too dry or water that is too hard. Increase the humidity, use rainwater or filtered water, and reduce artificial heating near the plant.
