How to Care for a Brighamia Badge

Watering Brighamia badges

Water your Brighamia insignia regularly, but be careful not to let the soil become soggy.
Wait until the top layer of potting soil feels almost dry before watering again.
In the warm months once a week is sufficient, in winter keep it to every two weeks.

Light Needs Brighamia Badges

This plant likes plenty of bright, indirect light to stimulate the special flowers.
Place the Brighamia badges near an east- or west-facing window, out of direct sunlight.
If there is insufficient light, the stem can stretch and the flowers will be less numerous.

Common problems with Brighamia badges

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves often indicate overwatering or poorly draining soil.
Check whether the potting soil drains well and pour away any excess water.
If necessary, use airy potting soil such as potting soil for aroids to prevent root rot.

Plant drips

Sometimes you can see water droplets along the leaves: this is called guttation and is usually harmless.
It occurs because the plant wants to get rid of excess water through special stomata.
Ensure good air circulation and reduce watering if necessary.

Plagues

Mildew, thrips and spider mites sometimes occur on tropical plants.
Remove visible insects with a damp cloth or use our jungle mist spray for a gentle treatment.
For persistent infestations, sticky traps against fungus gnats or a natural spray are a good solution.

Roots stick out at the bottom

Healthy roots can sometimes grow out of the drainage holes when the plant outgrows its pot.
This means that your Brighamia insignia needs a larger pot or fresh potting soil.
Repot in a slightly larger pot with fresh potting soil for aroids or a mix for tropical plants.

Brown leaf edges

Brown edges often indicate air that is too dry or too much direct sun.
Increase the humidity with a plant mister or place the Brighamia on a hydro grain dish.
Place the plant a little further away from the window or use a sheer curtain to filter bright sunlight.
