How to Care for an Aromatic Coffee Grow Kit

Watering the Aromatic Coffee Grow Set

A healthy Aromatic Coffee Grow Kit prefers even, but not overly wet, soil. Water about once a week and check that the top layer has dried slightly. Preferably use a gentle stream from the Elho 1.5L watering can to ensure a sparing watering and prevent a muddy layer.

Light for the Aromatic Coffee Grow Set

The Aromatic Coffee Grow Kit thrives in bright, indirect light. Place your coffee plant near an east- or west-facing window, but avoid direct midday sun. Too little light slows growth and can cause the leaves to fade, while too much direct sunlight causes brown spots.

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves are often caused by overwatering or overly wet roots. Check the soil is still moist before watering again and, if necessary, add some perlite for better drainage. Also read our tips for root rot on the Plantrekkers blog: What to do about root rot?

Plant leaking water

Sometimes you'll see droplets on the leaf margins or at the edge of the pot; this is called guttation. It's a natural process by which the plant tries to get rid of excess moisture. As long as this isn't accompanied by brown spots or mold, you can safely continue with your normal watering schedule.

Pests

Coffee plants can be affected by spider mites, thrips, and fungus gnats. Regularly check the undersides of the leaves and treat pests with a mild pesticide. For example, try sticky traps for fungus gnats and increase air circulation with a plant sprayer.

Roots emerge from the bottom of the pot

When roots grow out of the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot. Choose a slightly larger pot and fresh potting soil from our Potting Soil and Accessories collection. For young coffee seedlings, you can start them in nursery pots and later switch to a decorative pot.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown leaf edges often indicate low humidity or too much direct sunlight. Increase the humidity by misting the plant occasionally or placing it on a tray with hydroponic clays. Read more in our blog post: 5 tips to increase humidity in your home .
