The Alocasia Portadora is a real eye-catcher with its large, olive-colored leaves and marbled veins. This tropical beauty instantly enlivens your living room and pairs perfectly with other striking green houseplants. Pair it with a Monstera Deliciosa or a Monstera Minima, for example, for an exotic urban jungle style. Thanks to its relatively easy care, the Alocasia Portadora is also recommended for novice plant enthusiasts.
How to care for an Alocasia Portadora
Watering the Alocasia Portadora
Alocasia Portadora prefers evenly moist, but not soaking wet, potting soil. Use a well-draining soil such as alocasia potting soil to prevent root rot. Water as soon as the topsoil begins to feel slightly dry, usually once a week. During warmer months, you can check and top up more frequently.
Light requirements of the Alocasia Portadora
The Alocasia Portadora grows best in a spot with bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, so avoid a south-facing window without a curtain. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. If you notice the leaves are staying smaller or the color is fading, try adding a little more light or moving it to a brighter corner.
Common problems
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves on an Alocasia Portadora often indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Check that the pot has sufficient drainage holes and that excess water can drain away. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. For more tips on root rot, consult the instructions in our blog post about root rot .
Is the plant dripping water?
Sometimes the hydathodes at the leaf tips can release moisture, a natural process called guttation. This occurs mainly at night when humidity is high and evaporation is low. Place the plant on a coaster to catch dripping water. Want to increase humidity without dampness? Try our jungle mist spray .
Pests and vermin
Spider mites and thrips can sometimes settle on Alocasia Portadora. Regularly check the undersides of the leaves for small webs or dots. Treat with a mild soap solution or use our sticky traps against fungus gnats to control pests. Also, maintain adequate humidity to reduce the risk of arachnids.
Carrots come out of the pot
When the roots begin to reach the bottom of the pot, the plant is ready for repotting. Move the Alocasia Portadora to a pot one size larger every 12–18 months, preferably in spring. Use fresh potting soil for a fresh, nutrient-rich base and to encourage healthy growth. You can also take cuttings from healthy rhizomes in the meantime.
Brown edges on the leaf margin
Brown, dry edges are often caused by low humidity or too much direct sunlight. Move the plant a little further from the window or install a humidifier. Regular misting with our plant sprayer will maintain the humidity. A weekly dose of fertilizing with an aroid-specific fertilizer can also help.
