This tropical beauty elevates your interior and brings a touch of exotic rainforest into your home. Thanks to its robust nature and moderate care requirements, the Macrorrhiza is ideal for amateur plant enthusiasts.
Pair your Alocasia Macrorrhiza with a beautiful pot from our "Buy Pots for Houseplants" collection. Use special potting soil for aroids for optimal growth. Add accessories like hydroponic clay pebbles from our hydroponic clay pebbles-leca collection and give your plant exactly what it needs.
How to care for an Alocasia Macrorrhiza
Watering your Alocasia Macrorrhiza
Alocasia macrorrhiza prefers evenly moist soil, but not puddles. Water regularly when the top 2 centimeters of soil feels almost dry. Each time you water, check that excess water drains away properly through the pot's drainage system, for example, with hydroponic clay pebbles from our hydroponic clay pebbles-leca range .
Light requirements of Alocasia Macrorrhiza
This tropical giant requires bright, indirect light to keep its large leaves healthy and glossy. Place the plant a few meters from an east- or west-facing window, out of direct sunlight. Too little light slows growth and can cause leaf discoloration; for a similar plant, check out our Monstera Deliciosa or the air-purifying ZZ Plant .
Is Alocasia Macrorrhiza poisonous?
Alocasias contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation if ingested by pets or children. Therefore, keep the plant out of reach of curious kittens and toddlers. For a non-toxic option, consider our Pilea Moon Valley or the safe Calathea Sanderiana .
Other Alocasia varieties
The Alocasia family offers many more decorative choices, for example:
- Alocasia Zebrina
- Alocasia Black Velvet
- Alocasia Cucullata
- Alocasia Portadora
- Alocasia Polly
- Alocasia Frydek
- Alocasia Macrorrhiza itself naturally
Common problems with Alocasia Macrorrhiza
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves often indicate soil that is too wet or too dry. Check the moisture level with your finger before watering. Adjust your watering schedule and use a more airy potting soil with perlite or Leca from our potting soil and accessories collection.
Plant drips
In high humidity, Alocasia macrorrhiza may release water droplets (gutation). This is normal and helps the plant get rid of excess moisture. Ensure adequate ventilation and avoid drips on furniture by using a saucer.
Plagues
Spider mites and mealybugs can nest in the leaf veins. Inspect the undersides of leaves weekly and treat at the first sign with a natural insecticide from our fungus gnat sticky traps or a herbal spray. Regular dusting with a microfiber dusting mitt helps keep nasty critters at bay.
Roots go at the bottom of the pot
When strong roots protrude through the drainage holes, it's time for more space. Repot your Alocasia macrorrhiza into a larger pot with fresh aroid potting soil. Choose a pot 2–4 cm larger in diameter to give the roots sufficient growing space.
Brown edges on the leaves
Brown edges are caused by drafts that are too cold, low humidity, or soil that is too tight. Move the plant away from fans and dry radiators. Increase the humidity with a plant mister or place a bowl of water near the pot.
