How to care for a banana plant

Watering the Banana Plant

A banana plant prefers evenly moist soil. Water it about once a week in spring and summer, keeping the topsoil slightly moist. In autumn and winter, you can water it a little less often, as the plant grows more slowly. Ensure excess water can drain well, for example, with a pot from our pots for houseplants, which you can buy here .

Light requirements of the banana plant

The banana plant grows best in a bright spot without direct sunlight. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Too little light will result in elongated stems and smaller leaves. Do you have a less bright corner? Then combine it with an air-purifying Aglaonema Silver Bay or a hardy Dracaena Marginata .

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves on the banana plant often indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Check to prevent root rot by draining excess water. Repot in fresh, airy potting soil such as our potting soil for aroids if the soil stays wet for too long.

Dripping leaves

Sometimes you'll see moisture dripping from the leaf edges; this is called guttation. In warm, humid weather, this is normal and harmless. Ensure adequate air circulation to prevent mold growth. We also offer a handy plant mister to help keep the humidity stable.

Plagues

Spider mites, mealybugs, or thrips can all infest the banana plant. Regularly check the base and undersides of leaves. For emerging pests, treating with our sticky traps against fungus gnats or an organic plant spray can help.

Roots emerge from the soil

If roots are sticking out of the bottom of the pot, the banana plant is too cramped. Repot it in a slightly larger pot, for example, from our pot collection . This will give it room to grow new roots and keep it growing healthily.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown edges are often caused by air that is too dry or water that is too hard. Increase the humidity with our moss pole or a humidifier. Use filtered or tapped water to prevent limescale buildup.
