How to care for an Alocasia Black Velvet
Watering Alocasia Black Velvet
An Alocasia Black Velvet prefers evenly moist soil, but not soggy roots. Water about once a week and always check that the top layer of potting soil is almost dry. Overwatering can cause root rot; therefore, it's best to use a mixture with well-draining components such as perlite or potting soil for Alocasia .
Light for Alocasia Black Velvet
This plant grows best in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the dark green, almost black leaves, while too little light affects leaf color and growth. Place your Alocasia near an east- or west-facing window, or combine it with houseplants that have similar light requirements, such as the Monstera Minima .
Potting soil and fertilizer
An airy, slightly acidic potting soil is ideal for aroids. You can use a ready-made mix or mix your own with peat-free potting soil supplemented with hydroponic clays and perlite. Fertilize every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid plant food. Common problems and solutions
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves are often caused by a combination of too much water and insufficient light. Check your watering and adjust it to a weekly routine when the surface is dry. Also read the tips in our blog post about caring for Alocasia for additional background information.
Plant dripping
Moisture drips at the edges could be guttation, a natural process in which the plant releases excess water. This occurs primarily at night or in high-humidity environments. As long as the soil isn't constantly soaked, there's no reason to panic.
Plagues
Spider mites, thrips, and scale insects can plague your Alocasia Black Velvet. Inspect the undersides of the leaves weekly and treat minor infestations immediately with a mild soap solution or use sticky traps to repel fungus gnats . For severe infestations, you can also use an organic spray or seek advice via our contact page .

Brown edges on the leaves
Brown edges are often caused by dry air or too much direct sunlight. Place a humidifier nearby or group your Alocasia with other air-loving plants like Asplenium Parvati . Avoid drafts and bright sunlight to keep the leaves healthy.
