How to Care for a Yucca (Elephant's Foot)
Watering Yucca (Elephant's Foot)
A Yucca (Elephant's Foot) doesn't need much water and can withstand periods of drought. Water the plant only when the top few centimeters of potting soil feel dry. Overwatering can cause root rot, so make sure you use a well-draining potting soil, such as our potting soil for aroids .
Light Yucca (Elephant's Foot)
This yucca thrives in a bright spot, preferably near an east- or west-facing window. Direct sunlight isn't harmful, but avoid burning the leaves during the hottest hours. It will also thrive in a slightly darker corner, although it will grow more slowly there.
Soil and nutrition
Use an airy, well-draining potting soil, such as our houseplant mix . Check regularly for sufficient nutrients and feed a balanced houseplant fertilizer once a month during the growing season. An extra boost with some perlite or vermiculite helps keep the roots healthy; look for products like perlite .
Repotting Yucca (Elephant's Foot)
Ideally, repot your yucca every two to three years, towards spring, into a pot one size larger. Choose a pot with good drainage holes and combine it with hydroponic or clay pebbles in the bottom for optimal drainage. When repotting, you can also prune away damaged roots and rejuvenate the plant. For handy tools, check out our repotting mats .
Common Problems with Yucca (Elephant's Foot)
Yellow leaves
Yellow leaves are often caused by too much water or too little light. Check the soil moisture and adjust your watering routine. Carefully remove affected leaves and check out our tips in the yucca care blog.
Plant is dripping
Dripping leaves can indicate root rot or a sudden change in temperature. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly and ensure adequate air circulation. Remove affected roots and use clean potting soil when repotting.
Plagues
Spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips can occasionally strike, especially when humidity is low. Rinse the leaves with lukewarm water or treat them with a natural spray like our jungle mist spray . Repeat the treatment weekly until all pests are gone.
Roots stick out at the bottom of the pot
Are the roots already visible at the bottom of the pot? Then it's time to repot. Choose a pot that's 2–4 cm wider than the current one and add fresh soil. This gives your yucca room to grow and prevents suffocation.
Brown edges on leaves
Brown leaf edges are often caused by overly dry air or direct contact with cold glass surfaces. Increase the humidity with a plant mister or place the pot slightly away from the window. Don't water too often, but ensure an even moisture balance.
