Thanks to its succulent properties, it doesn't require daily watering, ideal for those still learning about plant care.

Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata' fits perfectly in a modern pot from our "Buy Pots for Houseplants" collection. Combine it with some hydroponic clay pebbles from our "Hydropellets - Clay Pebbles (LECA)" range for good drainage. This helps prevent root rot and promotes an airy potting soil structure.

How to care for a Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata'

Watering Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata'

Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata' stores water in its thick stems and therefore requires very little water. Water only when the top layer of soil is completely dry. Too much or too often water quickly leads to root rot. In summer, you can water once every three weeks, and less often in winter. Ensure excess water can drain through the drainage holes, possibly with a layer of perlite from our Perlite range.

Light for Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata'

This Euphorbia thrives in a bright, light spot indoors. Direct sunlight isn't a problem, as long as the plant can gradually adjust to strong sunlight. Place 'Cristata' near an east- or south-facing window. In darker rooms, it grows less compactly, and the coral shapes may be less pronounced. Feel free to combine it with other sun-lovers such as Aloe vera or our Cacti & Succulents mix .

Is Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata' poisonous?

Euphorbias contain a white, milky sap that can irritate the skin and eyes. Keep young children and pets away, or place the plant on a higher shelf. Wear gloves when repotting or maintaining the plant to prevent contact with the sap. If you come into contact with the sap, wash your skin with mild soap and water.

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves are often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. First, check that the potting soil isn't soggy and adjust your watering schedule. If necessary, replace the topsoil with fresh cactus soil or mix it with some perlite.

Plant leaking moisture

A clear sign that your Euphorbia is stressed by overwatering or sudden temperature fluctuations. Let the soil dry out completely before watering again. Remove any damaged stems and place the plant in a warmer, drier location.

Plagues

White mealybugs and spider mites can occur in dry conditions. Inspect the stems regularly and wipe away pests with a cotton swab soaked in alcohol. For a natural alternative, you can use our Sticky Traps against fungus gnats .

Roots growing from drainage

When roots appear at the bottom of the pot, it's time to repot. Choose a pot one size larger and use fresh, well-draining potting soil. Don't cover the root ball too deeply to prevent further rot.

Brown edges on stems

Brown or black edges often indicate sunburn or frost damage. Avoid sudden exposure to bright midday sun and keep frost at bay. Place your Euphorbia in a spot with indirect sunlight during warm weather.

With the right combination of light, moderate watering, and well-draining potting soil, you'll enjoy your Euphorbia lactea 'Cristata' for a long time. Have any questions?
