How to care for an Aloe Vera

Watering Aloe Vera

Aloe vera prefers short, thorough waterings, allowing it to dry out in between. Before watering, check that the top layer of soil is completely dry. Overwatering leads to root rot, which is easily prevented by using a pot with good drainage. For additional tips, read our blog post about Aloe vera care .

Light requirements of Aloe Vera

Aloe vera requires plenty of light to stay healthy and develop bushy leaves. Ideally, place the plant in a spot with direct morning or afternoon sun. In summer, avoid the harshest midday sun behind glass, or give the plant a light shade. For more sun-loving houseplants, see our collection of plants for full sun .

Is Aloe Vera poisonous?

While aloe vera gel is often used in cosmetics and food products for humans, the latex in the leaves can cause stomach upset in pets. Keep the plant out of reach of cats and dogs if you own one. Looking for a truly non-toxic houseplant? Then read our tip list in the blog post about non-toxic plants for cats and dogs .

Different types of Aloe Vera

Within the large Aloe genera, you'll find various varieties, each with its own unique charm and growth characteristics. Below is a selection of popular varieties:

Frequently occurring problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves often indicate overly wet potting soil or insufficient light. Let the soil dry completely before watering again and move your Aloe Vera to a brighter spot. Are there noticeable puddles in the pot? Consider a more airy potting soil mix from our potting soil and accessories collection.

Plant leaking moisture

A few droplets on the leaf tips are usually guttation fluid and not harmful. However, if your plant leaks at the bottom of the pot, it could indicate overfertilization or root blockage. Carefully rinse the soil and give the Aloe Vera a fresh mix, such as in our potting soil for aroids .

Plagues

Spider mites and mealybugs can nest between the fleshy leaves of your Aloe Vera. Regularly check the leaf axils and treat with organic insect repellents or sticky strips. For example, try our sticky traps for fungus gnats as a preventative measure in your plant corner.

Roots grow from the bottom of the pot

If the roots grow out from under the holes, your Aloe Vera will literally outgrow its shell. Time for a larger pot. Choose a pot with good drainage holes and use an airy cactus and succulent soil from our potting soil and accessories section . This will give the root ball plenty of room to grow.

Brown edges on the leaf margins

Brown edges are caused by excessively bright sunlight or dry air. Move your plant slightly away from the window or soften the midday sun with a light curtain. Increase the humidity in your home if necessary; read our tips in the article " 5 Tips for Increasing Humidity ."
