Aloe Vera care
Aloe Vera Watering
The Aloe Vera needs little water because of its ability to store water in its leaves. Between April and October it needs moderate watering to prevent it from drying out, so it is best to give it some water every 2 weeks. During the winter period the plant can go weeks without water. Look for signs of overwatering, such as mushy leaves, especially in low light. If the leaf tips start to brown and contract or curl up, more frequent watering may be necessary.
Spraying
Spraying is not necessary for Aloe Vera, as it naturally tolerates dry air. Rinsing occasionally to remove dust is recommended.
Light and Heat
Aloe Vera thrives in partial shade to full sun. Direct sunlight is acceptable, but the plant will grow faster in a brighter spot. Avoid too much distance from the window to prevent rot. The minimum temperature ranges from 10 ℃ during the day to -2 ℃ at night.
Aloe Vera Repotting
It is advisable to repot Aloe Vera every two years, preferably in the spring. Use a pot that is at least 20% larger than the previous one, filled with cactus potting soil for good drainage. The suitable potting soil can be found here: Potting soil Cactus and Succulents
Feeding Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera needs little nutrition and grows naturally in poor soil. Feed the plant in spring with specific cactus food, reduced to a quarter of the recommended amount to prevent overfeeding.
Maintaining Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera discolored leaves
Brown, soft leaves often indicate overwatering, while yellow leaves can indicate too much direct sunlight. Cut away any damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy.
Pruning
Aloe Vera can be pruned by simply cutting off leaves. The sap of the plant has healing properties and can also be used externally for skin care and burns.
Aloe Vera Cuttings
Aloe Vera cuttings can be done by taking offshoots, letting them dry and then planting them in compost mixed with sand.
Is the Aloe Vera blooming?
Although Aloe Vera flowers in the wild, this rarely happens in domestic circumstances. The flowers are usually yellow or red in colour and appear on long stems from the centre of the plant. After flowering, it is best to remove the stem as close to the centre as possible.
