How to care for an Alocasia Silver Dragon

Watering the Alocasia Silver Dragon

An Alocasia Silver Dragon prefers a consistently moist but not wet substrate. Water your plant as soon as the top layer of potting soil has dried slightly, but avoid allowing the roots to sit in standing water. A good quality potting soil, such as our potting soil for aroids, offers the right balance between water retention and drainage.

Light requirements of the Alocasia Silver Dragon

This exotic plant originates from shady tropical forests, so avoid direct sunlight. Place your Alocasia Silver Dragon in a bright spot away from the intense midday sun, for example, near an east- or west-facing window. Sufficient diffused light will allow the characteristic silver-green leaf markings to develop optimally.

Frequently occurring problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves can indicate either too much or too little water. First, check the moisture content of the potting soil and adjust your watering routine. You can treat overly wet roots by temporarily reducing watering and allowing the pot to drain thoroughly.

Plant drips

When you water your Alocasia Silver Dragon, it's often extra-foliation: the plant releases excess moisture onto the leaf edges. This process, called guttation, is normal in high humidity and cooler nighttime temperatures. As long as the potting soil isn't constantly soaking wet, there's nothing to worry about.

Plagues

Spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips can nest on leaves in dry air and under stress. Regularly inspect the underside of leaves and treat at the first sign of symptoms with a mild insecticide or check out our sticky traps for fungus gnats. Increase the humidity with a humidifier or a container of water with hydro grains.

Roots at the bottom of the pot

Aerial roots are a normal part of Alocasia and help the plant absorb moisture from the air in nature. As long as the potting soil remains fresh and nutrient-rich, you can safely let these roots grow against the side of the pot. For a neater appearance, you can choose a larger pot or support the plant with a moss pole.

Brown edges on the leaves

Brown edges are often caused by dry indoor air, too much direct sunlight, or a lack of nutrients. Increase the humidity with a plant mister or humidifier and avoid direct sunlight. Feed houseplants every four to six weeks during the growing season.
