When to plant hyacinths: timing is everything
The best time to plant hyacinths
Hyacinths are true harbingers of spring, and to let them reveal their magic in spring, you need to plant them early. The ideal time to plant hyacinths is in the fall, between September and November. Don't wait until the first frost, but plant them after the temperatures have dropped slightly. A crisp autumn day, partly cloudy, or just after a rain shower is ideal. The soil is still easy to work, and the bulbs can take root before winter sets in.
In the open ground
Hyacinths prefer a sunny or partially shaded spot in well-drained, not too wet soil. Dig the planting hole two to three times as deep as the bulb is tall, averaging about 12 to 15 cm, with the point facing upwards. Leave about 10 cm between each bulb for good spacing. If you have heavy clay soil, mix in some coarse sand or use a modified potting soil such as that found in our potting soil collection . This will prevent the bulbs from rotting.
In a greenhouse or under glass
For those who are impatient or just want to enjoy the fragrant flowers early, you can also plant hyacinths in a greenhouse. You can even start there as early as late August. Just make sure it's not too warm, as the bulbs need to develop roots in cool conditions. After planting, keep them in the dark for a while (for example, in a sheltered spot or a dark corner) at a maximum temperature of 9°C (9°F) until the first shoots emerge.
Additional tips for flowering success
Use good flower bulbs and pots

Combine with other flower bulbs

What after planting?
Once you've planted the bulbs, let nature take its course. Give them some water if it's been dry for a while after planting, but don't overdo it. It's best to leave them alone during the winter. As soon as the first rays of sunshine peek through in February and March, the first leaves appear. And then... they bloom!
Hyacinths in the house?
Did you know you can also grow hyacinths as houseplants, for example, in pretty glass vases or pots? They even grow without soil, just with a little water. Combine them with a pretty plant hanger for a decorative look above your dining table or window.
