How to care for a Peperomia Argyreia 'Watermelon'

Watering

The Peperomia Argyreia 'Watermelon' prefers even moisture in its potting soil, but not wet feet. Water as soon as the top layer of soil feels slightly dry. Overwatering can cause root rot; read here what to do about root rot in your houseplants . Preferably use a watering can with a fine spout, such as the Elho 1.5L watering can .

Light

The Peperomia Argyreia 'Watermelon' thrives in bright, indirect light. Never place the plant in direct sunlight, as this can burn the leaves. A spot near a window without direct sunlight, or filtered light with a curtain, is ideal. For more tips on light requirements, consult our blog post about how much light a Monstera needs .

Humidity

Although Peperomias aren't particularly demanding when it comes to humidity, this species thrives at 50-60% humidity. A simple plant mister, like our Jungle Mist Spray , will maintain the right humidity. A bowl of water and hydroponic clays under the pot can also help. Read more in the article "5 Tips for Increasing Humidity in Your Home ."

Soil and pot

Use a loose, well-draining potting soil, such as our potting soil for aroids . Peperomias benefit from a little perlite or leca for extra drainage. Choose a pot with a drainage hole and, if desired, fill the bottom with hydroponic or clay pebbles.

Common problems

Yellow leaves

Yellow leaves often indicate overwatering or insufficient light. First, check that the soil isn't constantly soaking wet. If the light is insufficient, move the plant closer to a window or consider adding additional grow lights. Remove yellowing leaves to stimulate new growth.

Plant drips

Occasional dripping ('guttation') is normal for Peperomia Argyreia 'Watermelon'. Moisture can be released along the leaf edges, especially at night. Ensure adequate air circulation and reduce watering just before bedtime. If dripping is excessive, always check the soil.

Plagues

Spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs can sometimes bother your Peperomia. Regularly inspect the undersides of the leaves. Our sticky traps for fungus gnats offer relief from spider mites and aphids. For mealybugs, you can use a sponge or cotton pad soaked in water and a little green soap.

Roots growing out of the pot

If the roots are sticking out of the bottom of the pot, your Peperomia needs to be repotted. Choose a slightly larger pot and replace 20% of the old soil with fresh potting soil. Our nursery pots are very practical for small pots.

Brown edges on leaves

Brown edges are usually caused by dry air or direct sunlight. Increase the humidity with a plant mister and move the plant out of the bright midday sun. Trim away brown edges down to healthy tissue to prevent dehydration.
