If you're planting in the open ground, choose a sheltered spot out of the wind, with plenty of sun or partial shade. Magnolias prefer slightly acidic, humus-rich soil. There are many magnolias: the Magnolia stellata (Star Magnolia) blooms early in spring with star-shaped flowers. The Magnolia soulangeana (Castor Tree) is larger and has tulip-like flowers. For smaller gardens, a compact variety like the Magnolia "Susan" is perfect.

Some varieties are more sensitive to late frost. So, it's best to buy a sturdy variety that suits your garden. Even if you're planting a magnolia in a pot, a compact variety is the best choice.

Choosing the right place works wonders

Magnolias need just the right position: out of the cold east wind and in a spot with at least half the sun. Avoid areas with wet feet. If you have heavy clay soil, improve it with coconut husk or pumice to allow water to drain freely.

In a greenhouse, you need to ventilate regularly, especially on sunny days. The same rule applies here: not too wet, not too dry. Water at the rim of the pot so you don't drown the roots.
