When to Plant Crocuses?

When to Plant Crocuses: The Ultimate Guide for Beginner Plant Lovers

What are crocuses anyway?

Crocuses are cheerful spring bloomers that bring your flower boxes, borders, and lawn to life after a gray winter. They're available in a wide variety of colors—from white and yellow to purple—and are relatively easy to care for. Ideal for beginners taking their first steps in the gardening world, or for those who simply enjoy a colorful garden without the hassle.

When to plant crocuses in open ground?

The best time to plant crocuses in the ground is in the fall, between September and November. Why? Because the bulbs need colder temperatures to bloom. This cold period "wakes" the bulbs up, allowing them to emerge from the ground in early spring.

An excellent day for planting is a cloudy, cool autumn day. Not too wet – slushy mud is no fun – but definitely not a summer heatwave either. Ideally, choose a well-drained spot in your garden, as crocuses don't like wet feet.

When to plant crocuses in a greenhouse?

Want to get a head start and plant your crocuses in a greenhouse? That's possible too! In that case, it's best to start a bit earlier, namely in August or early September. The controlled conditions in the greenhouse encourage the bulbs to germinate earlier, so you might see crocuses blooming as early as January.

Make sure your greenhouse is well-ventilated. Too much heat or moisture can cause mold or disrupt flowering. Crocuses need a period of dormancy and don't want to be forced like some other vegetable plants in a greenhouse.

How do you plant crocuses?

Whether you're planting them in the garden or a greenhouse, planting them is child's play. Dig a planting hole about 10 cm deep and 7 cm apart. The "tip" of the bulb always points upward—think of it as a little nose reaching for the light. Then cover them with soil and water lightly in dry weather.

Crocuses also look great in flower boxes. Make sure you use airy potting soil and a pot with drainage holes. You can find good potting soil in our potting soil and accessories category . Feel free to add perlite or hydroponic clays for extra drainage if you live in a wet area.

Where is the best place to plant crocuses?

Crocuses thrive in sunny to lightly shaded spots. They will grow in full shade, but bloom much less profusely. Feel free to plant them in your lawn – they bloom early and are usually finished before the grass needs mowing.

You can also plant them between trees and shrubs where there's enough light in winter because the leaves aren't fully developed yet. Combine them with perennials like Aglaonema , for example, or place them as a colorful accent next to your Monstera Minima in a planter outside.

Why planting crocuses in the fall is so important

The cold period is indispensable

No cold, no blooms. Crocuses need the natural cycle of temperature changes to start growing. By planting them in the fall, you give the bulb enough time to develop roots and prepare for spring blossoming.

That's why we recommend not planting too late. If you wait until December, you risk the frost setting in too early and your bulbs dying. And that would be a shame to spoil all that gardening fun!

Combining crocuses with other flower bulbs

Crocuses work perfectly with other flower bulbs like tulips, daffodils, or grape hyacinths. For those who want to experiment and fill flower boxes, we offer additional tips in this blog post about planting flower bulbs in flower boxes.

For a long flowering period, plant different types of bulbs in layers: first, larger bulbs like tulips, planted deeper, then crocuses closer to the surface. This method is called lasagna planting – it requires little maintenance, but the results are impressive!

After planting: what now?

Once planted, you hardly need to do anything. Just water in dry weather. Once they start blooming in February or March, enjoy them and don't forget to watch the bees and bumblebees visit your colorful crocuses.

After flowering, simply let the foliage die back. This provides the bulb with energy to bloom again next year. Don't remove the foliage until it has completely yellowed. This way, you'll contribute to a healthy and flowering garden without too much effort.

Would you prefer something indoors?

Don't feel like gardening outdoors? No problem. Simply bring a colorful alternative into your home, like the Calathea Triostar or a robust ZZ plant . At De Plantrekkers, you'll find plenty of inspiration to make your interior green and cheerful.

Finally

Crocuses are the perfect step towards more confidence in your gardening adventure. They herald the end of winter and ask for almost nothing in return. And whether you plant them in the ground, in a pot on your balcony, or even in a greenhouse, one thing is certain: they're guaranteed to bring you joy.
