Caring for plants in winter

If you’re a plant lover, winter can be a tough time. The cold and darkness can make it hard to keep your plants healthy and happy. But with a little know-how, you can take care of your plants through the winter and keep them looking their best. Move your plants closer to the windows so they can catch more light . The days are getting shorter and the light is getting less bright, so an extra ray of sun is definitely good! Don't put them with their leaves against the window, that's just too cold!

Avoid placing plants near heat sources such as fireplaces or radiators. The sudden temperature fluctuations are not good for the plant. Find a spot with a constant temperature, out of the draft and away from heat sources!

Keep your home humid by running a humidifier during the cold months to maintain moisture levels around your home. There are many other ways to increase humidity in your home.

Do not repot your plants ! Repotting is always a shock for your plant and when the plant is dormant during the winter, it cannot adapt properly. Give less water and certainly no fertilizer ! The growth of the plants decreases in the winter and therefore they drink less. So pay attention to watering and reduce the frequency and quantity.

Some plants go into hibernation which can cause leaves to fall off or even the entire plant to die. With some species such as Caladium, you can save the tubers and replant them in the spring!
